Mast
The vertical spar whose main use is to carry sails. Outhaul A line by which a sail is hauled outboard along a spar. Reef Knot A square knot formed by two half hitches in which the ends always fall in line with the outer parts. It is one of the most commonest and useful knots used at sea. Boom A spar used to extend the foot of the sail. Traditionally a boom is a solid round wooden spar, tapering slightly towards the ends. Step the mast Erect the mast by fitting the heel into the step on the keel of the Optimist and setting up all its standing rigging.
Sprit A long spar which stretches diagonally across a four - sided fore- and-aft sail to support the peak. Sprit can clearly be seen in photo (click to enlarge) Knot The nautical measure of speed, one knot being a speed of one nautical mile per hour. Photo: © Nick Bunt,2003,Spinnaker 1 Kicker or kicking strap The name usually given by helmsmen of racing dinghies and yachts to the martingale which prevents the boom of the mainsail from rising when it swings outwards, and thus presents a flatter sail to the wind and increases its driving power. |
